Distinguished and Famous people from Otway Region
🔦 Henry Bayles Ford
Henry Bayles Ford tended the Cape Otway light from 1848 to 1878, spending three decades at a demanding coastal post. The work involved keeping a navigational service reliable in an isolated setting, far removed from the romantic image of a lighthouse silhouette. His surviving correspondence with botanist Ferdinand von Mueller reveals another interest: sending plant material for scientific attention. A letter from the lightstation in 1870 records a specimen obtained through a friend coming from Apollo Bay. The keeper’s life connected shipping safety, a small coastal community and the wider scientific study of Victorian plants.
🌿 Lizzie Corke and Shayne Neal
Lizzie Corke and Shayne Neal founded the Conservation Ecology Centre to support a healthier Otways landscape. Its work has included woodland restoration at Cape Otway, invasive-species control and research linking threatened-species protection with fire management. Corke also developed visitor enterprises, including Wildlife Wonders, to help finance conservation. Her 2020 Medal of the Order of Australia recognised service to the environment. The project gives the district a modern story of people turning concern for wildlife into sustained research and practical work. In this case, welcoming visitors helps pay for work continuing well beyond the visitor path.
